Doctor Suspended After Video Captures Her Mocking Patient With Severe Condition

CBS

There's nothing more terrifying than being transported to a hospital.

The last thing you need is to feel dismissed by the person who is supposed to treat you.

Unfortunately, hospital nightmares and mishaps happen more often than you'd think.

As someone who has lived with a family of health care professionals, these stories are shocking and will undoubtedly make you fear getting sick.

An emergency room doctor in Northern California was suspended after she was recorded questioning a 20-year-old man on just how sick he was.

On June 11, Samuel Bardwell was taken to hospital after suffering an anxiety attack during basketball practice. He collapsed on the floor, unable to speak and in a lot of pain.

Dr. Beth Keegstra, a contract doctor with the El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos, believed that Samuel's anxiety wasn't something to be concerned about.

Donald Bardwell, the patient's father, recorded the unpleasant experience.

In the video, Keegstra scoffed when her patient described his difficulty inhaling.

She laughs and says, "He can't inhale. Wow. He must be dead" to a nurse off-camera. Then she turns to Samuel and asks, "Are you dead, sir?"

"You are the least sick of all the people who are here, who are dying," Keegstra added.

According to the family, security was also there in the room. “I was just like, ‘Why would there be security, when I have done nothing wrong?'” Samuel told reporters.

Samuel's father argued that his son suffers from debilitating anxiety attacks and needs the drug Klonopin.

"It's just heartbreaking, you know, because I've seen him go in and out of consciousness," Donald told the CBS San Francisco station KPIX-TV.

The father thinks Keegstra was giving Samuel a hard time because she thought he was there to ask for narcotics.

After the doctor stopped mocking the basketball player, tests showed that Samuel was dehydrated. He was given anti-anxiety and pain medication before he left the hospital.

A spokesperson for El Camino Hospital told KPIX 5 in a statement, “We are saddened and disappointed by the physician’s unprofessional interaction with the patient in the video. The physician is a contracted provider and has been removed from our ER schedule.”

Samuel doesn't think the hospital is doing enough:

I think she needs to be terminated. On top of that, the hospital needs to be investigated."
