Prince Charles Uttered Five Words That Broke Princess Diana's Heart

It's hard to imagine anyone would be upset with Prince Harry as a son. The newly-married military veteran has certainly proven himself to be a caring, generous, and kind human being.

However, according to Princess Diana, Prince Charles wasn't thrilled when he was born for not one, but two reasons.

In the book Diana: Her True Story--in Her Own Words, author Andrew Morton wrote about Diana's life, including quotes from the former princess herself. It gave an in-depth look at her relationship with Charles, which she admitted had left her with "such pain."

Diana said that in between William and Harry's birth, her marriage was in "total darkness," and that "Harry appeared by a miracle." In the six weeks prior to Harry's birth, Charles and Diana were "very, very close to each other." The impending birth of a new child was getting them excited, but it didn't last too long.

"Then suddenly as Harry was born it just went bang, our marriage, the whole thing went down the drain," Diana confessed.

According to Diana, her husband's "first comment was: 'Oh God, it's a boy', second comment: 'and he's even got red hair.'"

"Something inside me closed off," she said.

A statue of Diana, Princess of Wales will be erected in the grounds of Kensington Palace at the request of her sons, The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The Princes have convened a committee to commission and privately raise funds for the creation of the statue. This committee will advise on the selection of the sculptor and will work with Historic Royal Palaces on the statue's installation in the public gardens at Kensington Palace. The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry said: "It has been twenty years since our mother's death and the time is right to recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue. "Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy." While the sculpting of the statue will begin soon, it is not currently possible to advise when it will be unveiled. It is hoped that this will occur before the end of 2017. Further announcements on the statue's sculptor and design will be made in due course.

Diana claimed that she knew Charles wanted a girl but that she was expecting a boy, so she purposefully withheld that information from him to avoid any tension.

"I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan. Charles always wanted a girl," Diana admitted. "He wanted two children and he wanted a girl. I knew Harry was a boy and I didn't tell him. Harry arrived, Harry had red hair, Harry was a boy."

You'd think that after Harry was born, Charles would have gotten over his desire for a daughter and instead celebrate his son, but Diana claimed that he kept complaining even at Harry's christening.

[Prince] Charles went to talk to my mother at Harry's christening and said 'We were so disappointed - we thought it would be a girl.'

Mummy snapped his head off, saying: 'You should realise how lucky you are to have a child that's normal.'

Ever since that day the shutters have come down and that's what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him.

These revelations from Diana certainly seem to break the long tradition of the royal family to rarely comment on issues within the family, but Morton conducted secret interviews with the late princess after hearing rumors she needed an outlet.

"I had been writing on royals for 10 years," he said in a 1997 interview. "I knew the social landscape. I knew the system. And I knew, already, that the reality of her life did not match the image. Diana's friends and staff were dropping dark hints about her unhappiness, and she needed the truth to come out, needed to confess."

Morton wasn't allowed in the palace to conduct interviews, but a mutual friend named James Colthurst would ask Diana the questions in private and then record her answers. She was in on it, of course, and Morton has six C90 tapes to prove it.

Now, of course, Harry and Charles seem to have a great relationship. The elder prince even walked Harry's bride Meghan Markle down the aisle at her wedding after her own father was unable to attend.

It still makes you wonder what else Diana was going through during her marriage.
